the veil
There has been a divided debate sparked by the House of Commons Leader Jack Straw as he has said that he would prefer if Muslim women not wear veils which cover the face..bbc news: 'Remove full veils urges Straw'
At the moment in the UK there is a little tension due to the recent suspected arrests regarding terrorism so I find the way he has sparked this debate to be puzzling.
Jack Straw had a high profile job in being Foreign Secretary until he started to make statements which weren't on the same page as Tony Blair, so in the reshuffle he got demoted. Since then he has been biding his time, Blair is stepping down and he needs to raise his profile, for better or for worse sparking this debate has done exactly that.
If people are not breaking the law how can you tell them how to dress. That is just plain nonsense. From what I have been reading Muslim Clerics are split as to whether Muslim women should wear the veil or not, so the choice is their own and Jack Straw knows that, but he also knows it is a devisive issue. Considering his constituancey is made up of roughly 25-30% Muslim residents I know this will get a strong reaction from some, but again Jack Straw knows how split this issue is and has gambled that it won't affect his seat.
Raising the debate is one thing, how he has gone about it has me scratching my chin.
